This collection of photos, family group sheets, letters, etc. came from George and Katie (Heitmeyer) Lockhart who lived at Mountain View, Arkansas in their retirement years. Apparently the collection was given to the Stone County Historical Society. When the Society was going through inventory in order to renovate the rooms, the package was given to me to try and find family to re-home the collection. My initial internet research took me right back to a website I maintain for Arkansas Quilt Trails. Katie was a prolific quilter and is recognized in the barn quilt narrative for the block located at Stone Bank which recognizes Stone County quilters.
Some of the older photos are of John Fredrick Heitmeyer, 1814-1886, born in Germany and Caroline Heitmeyer, 1837-1911, also born in Germany. I was able to find their profile on FamilySearch.org which made it nice to see the family tree. Buried at Friendship, Indiana. Photo about 1868.
The photos seem to be mostly Catherine “Katie” Heitmeyer’s ancestors with some of the older ancestors born in Germany and having immigrated to Indiana. A family group sheet in the collection gave me the names of Katie’s children from her first marriage with last name Palmer. At least one son has passed away, but I’m trying to contact the other son or her daughter, the latter believed to live around the Phoenix AZ area. The hunt is on! This will be a wonderful collection for a family member who treasures family history. The photos appear to be reprints in most cases.
There are about 40 photos in the collection as well as group sheets, letters, etc. I (Renee Carr) recruited my fellow FamilySearch consultants, Gary Warner and Philip Carr and we uploaded about 30 of the older photos to the personal profiles on FamilySearch that we could find. It is our hope that many descendants will be able to enjoy these old photos that are now accessible on FamilySearch.org.
UPDATE: I was able to track down Katie’s daughter and son-in-law who were anxious to receive the photos. The old photos and memorabilia are being mailed to Orlando, Florida. Another happy return!
