I met a nice gentleman today who is renovating a fascinating old building and will open an antique/gift shop right in beautiful downtown Leslie. Mr. Jack Benefiel is his name, and once I told him about my hobby to return old photos to family members, he pointed to this 1917 framed marriage license hanging on the wall. Jack, the soon-to-be proprietor, shared that he wanted this keepsake returned to family members of Jack and Hattie (Jones) Phillips as a gift. The marriage license shows that Jack Phillips of Bear Creek and Hattie Jones of Witts Springs were married on July 26, 1917 in Searcy County. A quick search on FamilySearch.org landed an entry for their marriage which agrees with this certificate and license, plus an obituary of their son, Glen L. Phillips who died in 2012. His obituary was published in the Kansas City Star and listed survivors, including Glen’s children. He has a daughter named Hattie…obviously named after her paternal grandmother whose marriage license this is. The hunt is on to locate a child or grandchild of Hattie & Jack’s so the family heirloom can be back where it belongs.
